Creating a virus - Basic organic modeling in Maya
Modeling an organic model with polygons can be very hard at times. Getting former edges to look smooth isn't always as easy as one would wish it would be... This is why I will now show you tha basic principle behind every organic modeling process: smoothing.
The techniques shown here are basically the same for any organic model: You create a rough, edgy Mesh and then smooth it. I will illustrate this in the following tutorial.
Creating a virus
First you will have to create a polygonal primitive called "soccer ball".
Now, select all the faces and then go to the "Edit Mesh" menu. Here you will have to make sure that "Keep Faces Together" is turned OFF. If you don't do that you'll just make your soccer ball bigger when extruding, and won't get the desired result.
Talking about desired result: Go ahead and extrude all the faces (should still be selected), until you get something like this:
Now scale down the newly created faces.
And that's all you have to do concerning the modeling already. This might not look like a virus, yet, but look what happens when you apply "Smooth" with the given settings:
All that you have to do now is add a decent shader and you're good to go.
Now just duplicate this virus several times and scatter the duplicates on your viewport and you're done.
